​Ingredients of incense

In ancient China, people utilized many different kinds of aromatic medical herbs to make incense for fragrancing. These Kind of medical herbal powers that usually used for making herbal incense have the function of rectifying Qi with aromatics, transforming dampness, warming the interior and quiet the heart and open the orifices. They can also so help to repel insects and prevent flu. 

Agarwood 沉香

It is the King of incense ingredient. The mysterious and peaceful smell of the agarwood was generally in luxury purfume and incense. The Chinese medical functions are

1. relieves spasm and epilepsy

2. inhibits central nervous system

3. antibiotic

4. relieves pain,

5.calming,

6. anti asthmatic.

7. inhibiting effect on spasm of the smooth muscles of the intestine

Sandalwood 檀香

 It is the most common used ingredient in Chinese incense. The smell of the sandalwood is sweet, it can also relief from fullness and pain in the stomach duct and abdomen.  The origin of Sandalwood is from India. 

Cypress 柏香
Cypress powder not only the main ingredient of Tibetan incense but also the main ingredient of traditional Chinese incense. According to the Chinese medical scripture, the properties of Cypress is neutral and sweet, it smells light and elegant, can help for relaxation and relief the daily pressure. The Medical functions are insomnia with irritability, palpitations, instant sweating due to deficiency, neurasthenia, constipation, weak memory, losing hair.

Borneol 龍腦

This is the only one herb that can produce Mint cool smell when it is burnt. The Medical use can be for fainting due to strokes or heat, bunacle, pain in joints, ulceration of the cornea, sores in the mouth, eczema.

Acorus Root 菖蒲

The medical usage:

Being mainly used in delirium, epilepsy, coronary diseases, angina, arrhythmia, stroke, vertigo, ringing in the ears, atrophic gastritis, external injury of the brain, mentally handicapped/disabled.


 

Sand Ginger 山奈

This herb is usually used in cooking with Chicken. Also it can be used for getting rid of the tick and louse because of the strong smell. The Medical use is to cure chest and abdomen paint, dysentery, tooth cavity and ache. Also use as spice in cooking.Today it is being used in anti cancer, anti-pregnancy, anti epilepsy, anti inflammation, anti spasm, anti ulcer, promoting bile secretion, as diuretics, arresting cough.
 

Common Vladimiria 木香

The medical usage:

​Curing flatulence and pain in the abdomen, diarrhea, vomiting caused by weak digestion. For bronchitis, digestive tract infection: yeast infection, dysentery, and lack of appetite.

Patchouli 藿香

Usually used in western perfume.
The medical usage:

For curing weak digestion, lack of appetite,  diarrhea/vomiting, dysentery, coughing, bad breath, vomiting and diarrhea or chest or abdomen tightness caused by pixu (spleen deficient) .

Clove 丁香

Always used for cooking, especially in cury.

The medical usage:

For cold and pain in the stomach, hiccups, vomiting: often used with shi ti (persimmon stems). For vomiting, often used with ban xia. (Not to use in cases of vomiting with heat syndromes).For impotence, weak legs, or vagina yeast infection.

Frankincense 乳香

​Usually used in Catholic church.
Medical usage: 

  1. improves circulation, repairs muscle, as resolvent.

  2. Being used in :

  3. pain due to blood clots,

  4. spastic muscle,

  5. carbuncles,

  6. gum bleeding,

  7. gingivitis,

  8. rheumatoid arthritis,

  9. cirrhosis of liver,

  10. amenorrhea,

  11. physical injuries,

  12. ulcerated wounds not healing.

Cinnamon 玉桂

Always used for cooking and western dessert.

The medical usage:

  1. tonic for stomach, rid of wind, to promote sweating, for headache, anemia,

  2. cold limbs, to promote urination.

  3.  to promote lung qi, in chill and fever, cold phlegm, diarrhea, muscle spasm,

  4. headache, back pain, sweating, to stop easily being annoyed, strengthening

  5. muscles and bones, promote circulation.

  6. use in impotence due to shenyangxu (kidney yang deficient)
